"When will I ever use this?"

"A fool and his money is soon parted."
Thomas Tusser

If I had dollar for every time a student asked me: "when will I ever use this?" or "why do I need to know this?" I could retire in the Hamptons tomorrow. So I thought I should make my first blog an answer to these questions.

Following are typical classroom dialogues:

Chemistry Student:"When will I ever use this?"

Mrs Keck:"On your next test."

Chemistry Student: "Why do I need to know this?"

Mrs Keck's patented answer : " To pass your next test."

As you can see from the picture and quote above my blog I want you to think about how con artists use science. They use technical and sciencific terms to confuse and fool people. But the only people they fool are the ones that thought they would never need to know it.

I found the follow video ( It Runs on Water - The story of Free Energy)on the internet which purports to show a machine that burns water. We all know that water can decompose into hydrogen and oxygen gas which is then combusted to produce....more water!

Is this possible? Should I spend my children's college fund and invest in this machine? I want to know what you think I should do? Defend your answers using proven scientific facts.

Hi. You won't forget this but i had to ask ben how to get to this commment page. Is there any way to make the blog more open to others, or is the school hesitant on that because people will write bad things on there?
